Thank you for posting this! A friend who has a son with ADHD sent it to me after I made a frustrated comment to a link posted by the Special Education teacher at our school suggesting teachers and parents should read Dr. Welch’s article. Oh, dear. The link between diet and ADHD has been studied since the mid-70's and is shown to be marginal and certainly not for causation! The fact it was implied as etiology in her article is appalling and not unlike continuing to imply that vaccines cause autism. And, blaming the parents? I’m over it. The only people who do that still are those who feel the need to pat themselves on the back for parenting so well they could never have a child affected by ADHD. This to say nothing of painting all of America’s parents with one giant stroke, and all French parents with another. Yikes! And then there is the small issue of talking about completely different diagnostic criterion in the two countries. Might this have anything to do with the ‘lower incidence’ of ADHD in France? That’s like saying there are less women in France because they only consider ‘women’ to be females between the ages of 25 & 30.
Here is my proposal: for any teacher or parent who thinks medication is unnecessary or that ADHD can be therapized out of my 14 year-old, I would be happy to lend him out for the day, completely unmedicated and they can try their therapy on him. Then, I will write an article about it.
